When the Heat is On
Work in hot temperatures needs special attention to avoid health hazards – fatigue, dehydration, heat-stroke. The body’s natural thirst mechanism isn’t sufficient to replace body fluid, which is lost at a rate of up to one quart an hour.
To avoid dehydration:
- Drink five to seven ounces of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes. Liquid should be cool, not very cold.
- Avoid alcohol as it’s a diuretic (drains the body of liquid). Also stay away from tranquilizers – they increase the chances of fainting.
- Add a little salt to meals (salt retains water), but don’t take salt tablets.
