Avoid The 7 Traps of Strategic Planning
Most strategic failures are avoidable, yet strategists seem to fall into the same traps over and over again. It’s not hard to avoid the mosct common strategic traps, if you know what to look for:
1. Failing to recognize and understand events and changing conditions in the competitive envorinment.
2. Basing strategies on a flawed set of assumptions.
3. Pursuing a one-dimensionsional strategy that fails to create or sustain a long-term competitive advantage.
4. Diversifying for all the wrong reasons.
5. Failing to structure and implement mechanisms to ensure the coordination and integration of core processes and key functions acriss organizational boundaries.
6. Setting arbitrary and inflexible goals and implementing a system of controls that fails to achieve a balance among culture, reward and boundaries.
7. Failing to provide the leadership essential to the successful implementation of strategic change.
Friendlier Deadlines
Avoid a deadline crisis by scheduling interim targets for each component of the work. Goal: To make workflow evenly and give you time to correct mistakes. Reality: Meeting 70% to 80% of your one-date deadlines is not good enough. It is also not necessary to miss so many deadlines. Better scheduling solves the problem.
