5 Tips on What to Do After Being Promoted

Don’t rest on your laurels! After being promoted, start showing that you deserve the move up.

  1. Change your daily routine to focus on your new responsibilities.
  2. Avoid dramatic moves at first. If given a big assignment, create alternative approaches and ask your boss to comment on them. Or request a team and have your boss help put it together.
  3. The key to success is to find out what your boss and other senior executives expect you to achieve in your new position. Then aim higher. For example, if they expect a 10% improvement in departmental productivity, set your sights on 15%.

To make it easy for your boss to give you honest feedback, follow these tips:

1. Ask for feedback frequently.
2. Don’t get defensive. Just listen; don’t explain or justify.
3. Don’ overreact. Nobody will give you honest feedback if they think you’re going to be in blue funk as a result – or immediately ask for a raise.
4. Show appreciation for the feedback.
