The Manage-the-Worst Trap

The 30-60-10 rule for employees:

30% always work hard
60% respond to how they are treated; and
10% do a poor job no matter what

The trap companies fall into is focusing on keeping the 10% from destroying the business – by applying rigid work rules and depending on authoritarian supervisors. As a result, the middle 60%, knowing they are not trusted, work poorly, and the top 30% work for jobs elsewhere.

What you should do is to maximize return from the top 90% of the workforce by treating everyone as a trusted “thirty percenter”. The bottom 10% will stick out like sore thumbs – and under pressure from co-workers, will either improve or leave.
